Show your family’s roots

Alex Haley’s memorable 1977 television series “Roots” generated enormous interest in where our ancestors came from. His series illustrated one way that maps tell the story of history . . . your history . . . the history of your family. . .

  • Where they came from, how they got here, where they are now (including cemeteries).
  • What was then but isn’t now – the countries that existed 200, or even 100, years ago – but don’t exist now, or have a different name now.

You know, it’s all part of your roots. And there is no better way to show those roots than to depict all the comings and goings on a map.

Take my own roots, for instance.

I don’t intend to bore you with the details. I simply wish to illustrate how my roots – and YOUR roots – can be depicted graphically, using a map as the focal point.

The result is below. It’s a complicated map, but it tells the story. It’s probably too complicated for a book. But the details could be presented in separate parts – separate maps, if you will, spread out over several chapters of a book detailing the history of your family.
